NEWMAR SUPPLIES SMART MODULE BATTERY CHARGERS FOR NEW YORK CITY FERRIES

June 27, 2017

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – June 27, 2017 – Newmar is supplying new-technology battery chargers for the new fleet of passenger ferries, which will commence service this month in New York City.

The 85-ft. identical aluminum catamaran vessels were designed by Incat Crowther and are being built at two Gulf Coast shipyards, Horizon Shipbuilding and Metal Shark, for Citywide Ferry by Hornblower, which will operate the ferry network for New York City.

Newmar’s ABS-approved PTMS series modular chargers were specified for each of the vessels.

“The modular design of the 24-volt PTMS charger provides a significant improvement in system reliability,” said Newmar’s National Sales Manager, Brian Giannini. “The charger has three independent charger modules, outputting a total of 67 amps and providing built-in redundancy for uninterrupted service. If one module fails, the other two will continue to provide a charge to the batteries.”

“The modular charger units save time and money in maintenance and repairs,” he added. “A module can be removed quickly from the front panel and replaced by a new module in minutes by any crewperson without special technical training, eliminating the need to disconnect, remove, repair and reconnect the entire charger.”

Giannini noted that Newmar and Hornblower have worked together on many projects through the years, and Newmar’s track record of supplying reliable products with ABS approval, backed by factory service was a leading factor in winning this important program.

The first of the New York City Ferry vessels have been delivered and the first three routes are being inaugurated in June. The full network will be operational in 2018 and is expected to carry 4.6 million passengers per year from 21 landing sites.

Volvo Penta Expands its Service School Offerings in North America

June 8, 2017

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – June 7, 2017 – Volvo Penta of the Americas is expanding its service school offerings by partnering with vocational technical schools in the United States and Canada.

Volvo Penta is now offering technical training classes at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario; Oak Harbor Vocational School in Oak Harbor, Ohio; Lake Career & Technical Center in Camdenton, Missouri; and New England Institute of Technology in Providence, Rhode Island. Volvo Penta instructors will conduct the classes at the schools’ campuses for dealer and OEM service technicians, and also train the schools’ technical teachers to conduct future classes.

According to Magnus Gedda, manager of product training for Volvo Penta of the Americas, the program helps regional technicians receive the training they need, without having to travel too far. The primary objective of the program is to develop and prime the pool of talented technicians for employment at Volvo Penta dealerships.

“Working with these established vocational training schools will provide a major boost in capacity, allowing us to increase the number of technicians we train this year,” said Gedda. “We will continue reaching out to other schools and training facilities to further broaden opportunities for regional classes.”

“Regular training for our front-line service technicians is a key element in sustaining our consistent high customer satisfaction scores,” said Martin Bjuve, vice president of customer support and training for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “It’s critically important that techs stay current on all the new products and technologies that we’re bringing to market. That’s why we’re making a big investment to grow our service school locations and training staff.”

The regional locations will augment Volvo Penta’s primary North American training centers in Chesapeake, Virginia, and Burnaby, British Columbia. The company also schedules classes at a training facility in Vero Beach, Florida, for the large number of dealers in Florida, as well as special training sessions in Central America and North America. The technical training classes complement Volvo Penta’s extensive computer-based training program, which technicians can take online as their schedules permit.

VYCON® to Feature Kinetic Energy Storage Technology for Emergency Backup Power at 7×24 Change International Conference

June 6, 2017

CERRITOS, Calif. – June 6, 2017 – VYCON®, a subsidiary of Calnetix Technologies, will feature its VDC XXE flywheel kinetic energy storage system for emergency backup power at the 7×24 Change International Conference this month.

The VYCON VDC XXE provides a reliable, cost-efficient power source for uninterruptible power systems (UPS) in hospitals, data centers, broadcasting facilities and other mission-critical power applications. It provides instant regulated DC electricity to the UPS to start up and transition to the emergency generators during a power outage, ensuring vital systems and electronics are kept online.

“Stand-by generators typically cycle on within 10 seconds of a power failure, and the VYCON flywheel technology is designed to bridge a gap of 20-40 seconds,” explained Frank DeLattre, VYCON business unit leader. “Traditionally, banks of lead-acid batteries have been used to power the UPS, but batteries require a large dedicated temperature-controlled space with spill containment and hydrogen gas monitoring. The batteries have a relatively short service life and are subject to hazmat disposal requirements. In contrast, the VYCON flywheel system has 20 times higher reliability, a much smaller footprint, self-monitoring capabilities, is virtually maintenance-free and can be operated in extreme temperatures without degrading performance over a 20-year design life.”

“The VYCON flywheel system provides a three- to four-year return on investment, and over its 20-year lifetime it can save hundreds of thousands of dollars in operating costs compared with batteries,” he added. “It also provides a 96 percent reduction in carbon emissions over lead-acid batteries, based on a typical 1MW requirement and a 15-year operating period. This is equal to approximately 65,000 kg of operational and embedded carbon.”

Unlike other flywheel systems, the patented VYCON design uses full five-axis active magnetic bearings instead of less-reliable mechanical bearings. This frictionless maintenance-free flywheel levitation solution eliminates the need for lubrication and bearing replacement.

The VYCON flywheel systems are certified by most major three-phase UPS manufacturers. Over 1,000 VYCON systems have been deployed worldwide. VYCON supports its products with a network of more than 200 trained technicians available 24/7.

The 7×24 Change International Conference, to be held June 11-14 in Orlando, Florida, is presented by 7×24 Exchange, a leading knowledge exchange for those who design, build, operate and maintain mission-critical enterprise information infrastructures. The not-for-profit organization seeks to promote dialogue among industry professionals to address the many challenges facing owners and operators of these facilities. Visitors are invited to come by Booth 16 to learn more about the VYCON kinetic energy storage technology.

Volvo Penta Powers New Shoreline Sightseeing Boat in Chicago

June 5, 2017

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – June 5, 2017 – MV Skyview, the newest addition to the Shoreline Sightseeing fleet in Chicago, is powered by a pair of D13 400 hp Volvo Penta engines.

Skyview is Shoreline’s first vessel with Volvo Penta engines, and the owner couldn’t be happier.

According to Captain Chris LeBlanc, senior captain and Shoreline manager, Skyview is burning less than three gallons per hour for both engines during sightseeing tours. Other comparable boats in the fleet consume more than 10 gph. LeBlanc says the boat is smoother to run, easier to control and provides excellent torque, even at low RPMs, for docking and maneuvering in the narrow Chicago River. He also says the Volvo Penta engines produce no smoke or fumes and lower noise levels on deck, a big plus when conducting narrated tours.

The 100-ft. craft was built by Blount Boats of Warren, Rhode Island, and designed by Seacraft Design of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The steel vessel carries up to 300 passengers for architectural tours of the Chicago skyline. The twin Volvo Penta D13MH diesels with ZF W325 gearboxes were supplied and commissioned by Allemand Industries of Harvey, Louisiana.

“This shallow-draft excursion boat is a perfect showcase for Volvo Penta’s high-performance, fuel-efficient and clean-burning diesel technology,” said Dave Brown, director of marine commercial sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “The boat’s operators needed a vessel that was economical to operate and easy to maneuver in narrow waterways, while at the same time optimizing passenger comfort – and that’s exactly what Volvo Penta delivered.”
