Volvo Penta Executive Team to Hold Press Briefing:
• Introducing D13 1,000hp Engine and IPS1350
• Boating Dreams Film Series
• Volvo Ocean Race Update
• Seven Marine Acquisition
(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Oct. 31, 2017 – Volvo Penta of the Americas will introduce its most powerful diesel and IPS combo, as well as other new initiatives for the boating industry, in a press briefing at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this week.
The press briefing will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 in Booth 1203-1204 in the Engine Tent.
Four-Figure Horsepower and IPS Drive: Unbeatable Combination
Unveiled to the European market at the Cannes Yachting Festival last month, the new Volvo Penta 1,000hp diesel engine and its companion IPS1350 are making their first North American appearance in Fort Lauderdale.
The new 1,000hp D13 is the result of a major redesign by Volvo Penta engineers, including new pistons, more efficient injectors and improved cooling systems, combining to produce 11 percent more power than previous engines. The optimized power-to-weight ratio and excellent low-end torque provide incredible power on demand.
When integrated with Volvo Penta’s IPS pod drive, the D13 produces the equivalent power of a 1,350hp engine. The D13-IPS1350 package is available in twin, triple or quadruple installations. The latter of these yields power to the equivalent of 5,400hp.
“The D13-IPS1350 is Volvo Penta’s most powerful IPS package ever,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “It opens exciting new possibilities for American boatbuilders to bring the unparalleled benefits of IPS to larger boats up to 120 ft.”
The Volvo Penta IPS provides impressive performance advantages over traditional inboards, in terms of faster acceleration, higher top speeds and superior fuel efficiency, as well as easier maneuverability and reduced noise, vibration and emissions. Field tests revealed a 36 percent improvement in fuel economy with the IPS1350 over an equivalent inboard shaft system, resulting in a much greater cruising range without increasing fuel tank size. In addition, IPS gives designers more space below decks for cabins and entertainment areas.
Dreams Come True
Fort Lauderdale will also be the North American launch pad for the company’s new Boating Dreams online film series.
Boating Dreams will serve as a vehicle to share the dreams and emotions that inspire people to seek out the boating lifestyle. The first episode features Luca Santella, who talks about his latest boating dream –designing a new crossover yacht that intended to connect people even closer to the sea than ever before. Future segments will feature other individuals who feel a strong connection to boating and life at sea.
The videos are being published online and on Volvo Penta’s social media channels.
“The boating experience is about shared emotions and the joy of pursuing your own boating dreams,” said Huibers. “This is a very personal concept to me. My wife and I bought our first boat before our first home. We’ve spent countless hours together with our family on the water through the years. And now, in my position as president of Volvo Penta of the Americas, I’m fortunate to be able to live my dream in a very special way.”
“Volvo Penta’s Easy Boating initiative is our way of helping others realize their own boating dreams by removing barriers to enjoying the boating lifestyle,” he added.
Volvo Ocean Race Is Underway
Volvo Penta is once again a major supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race, which launched last month in Alicante, Spain. Each of the Ocean 65 high-performance sailboats has a Volvo Penta diesel with Saildrive for propulsion and powering onboard systems. Volvo Penta is also providing next-generation gas sterndrives for the race team RIBs and power generation for the Volvo Pavilion in the Race Village at host cities. The route covers more than 45,000 miles with stopovers in 12 cities around the world. The U.S. stopover will take place in Newport, Rhode Island in the Spring of 2018.
World’s Most Powerful Outboards
Volvo Penta entered the marine outboard segment this summer with the acquisition of Seven Marine. Founded in 2010, Seven Marine produces the most powerful outboard models in the world, running at 557 and 627hp.
Huibers stated, “We are combining the strength of two highly innovative companies to deliver an unbeatable engine range for the gasoline segment. We will not only come to market with an extremely attractive outboard solution, but we will deliver the benefits of our world-class service network to a broader range of customers.”
Seven Marine will continue to operate as a stand-alone entity, retaining its brand, product line and organizational structure. Huibers has assumed the position of chairman, and Seven Marine founder Rick Davis remains as president and CEO.
