Volvo Penta Is Becoming Go-To Choice for Repowers in North American Work Boat Market

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Nov. 30, 2017 – When it comes to repowering, vessel operators are increasingly looking at their return on investment in terms of total lifetime costs for purchasing and operating their new engines. That’s why so many of them are turning to Volvo Penta.

“The word is spreading around the waterfront that Volvo Penta is the best buy for repowering. Our lineup of modern marine diesels provide a combination of faster speeds to station, better fuel economy, longer service intervals and fewer service calls, as well as industry-leading low-RPM torque performance,” said Jens Bering, vice president of marine sales, Volvo Penta of the Americas. “What this means for vessel operators is more productivity and less downtime.”

Improving Productivity

The lobster industry is booming, buoyed by increased exports to Asia, and many lobster fishermen are taking advantage of the opportunity to repower their vessels. Justin Bruland, owner of Daddy’s Princess, out of Marathon, Florida, is one of them. He recently installed a pair of Volvo Penta D13 700 hp engines to replace the existing 780 hp diesels from another manufacturer. The repower was performed by FDDA, a Volvo Penta Power Center.

Bruland has since put over 300 hours on the new engines, and he sees a big difference in productivity. “In the past I’ve used about 140 gallons to take 400 traps out. Now I have 1,000 traps on the boat and I’m able to get out to our fishing spot using about 200 gallons. I’m hauling more than double the traps and using only slightly more fuel.”

Going Green

Commercial vessel operators in California are taking advantage of grants available from the state to repower with cleaner-burning engines. Phil Havlicek, owner of Reel Time Charters, used grant money from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to repower his 2000 Cabo Express with twin Volvo Penta D6 300 hp engines.

“Previously I had mechanical 350 hp turbocharged engines. They were good for their time but lacked low-end torque and were not clean burning,” said Havlicek. “With the Volvo Penta engines I have picked up fuel efficiency. I’m not seeing smoke, and they are quiet. I’m getting extra knots on the top end and most importantly a lot of low-end torque. I have a state-of-the-art boat that should last me well into my next stage of life.”

Havlicek uses the boat for salmon fishing, eco tours, sightseeing and memorials at sea. Reel Time has over 500 hours on its engines since being put back into service in July 2017.

Reducing Fuel Consumption and Noise

Since repowering their 1950s-era tug Miss Anne with a Volvo Penta D16C-MH keel-cooled engine last year, W.F. Magann Corp. is pleased with the result. The engine is approaching 1,000 hours, and so far there have been no service calls. The boat is much more fuel efficient, according to Magann, and the crew especially likes the low noise level onboard.

The repower was performed by Western Branch Diesel, a Volvo Penta Power Center. “We repowered with the 650 hp 1800-RPM Volvo Penta D16C-MH,” said Tim Walters, marine sales manager of Western Branch Diesel. “The keel-cooled engine was chosen for its fuel efficiency, weight-to-power ratio and a complementary size to the available space in the engine room.”

Boosting Performance

When the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) acquired a 1980s-vintage Zodiac RIB, the decision was made to repower with a Volvo Penta D4 225 hp Aquamatic engine. The installation on the 28-ft. RIB, overseen by Helmut’s Marine, includes a Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit System, which gives the operator a full overview of engine data and control of navigation with touchscreen displays.

On Lake Tahoe the boat has been used for training USFS staff, and was taken to the Oroville dam disaster in early 2017.

“The new Volvo Penta engine, combined with the drivetrain, weight and torque allow us to get up to speed and cross wakes easily with stability,” reported Joe Cook, patrol captain for the USS Tahoe National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. “It has performed excellently. This was the boat everyone wanted to be on during training. We all really noticed how stable the boat was and the power we were getting from the engine.”

Local Service Is Critical

“Without doubt, a key driver of our surging repower business is our extraordinary network of Power Centers and servicing dealers backed by our factory service engineers,” said Bering. “A common denominator in all these repower stories is that local service and technical support is absolutely critical.”

Bruland, Daddy’s Princess’ owner, said that the customer service and support from FDDA has been great. He only experienced one minor issue, which was resolved right away – on a Sunday. Havlicek agrees. He said the team at Helmut’s Marine made the whole process of securing the Air District grant and installing the new engine easy and seamless.

“We’re investing heavily in ongoing training for technicians to strengthen our worldwide service network,” said Bering. “We’re continually expanding our training courses, both at our in-house training center and at strategic remote locations. In the last year alone, more than 1,000 technicians attended our schools.”

Volvo Penta to Showcase IMO Tier III Diesel Engine Technology at WorkBoat Show

Global Solution for Commercial Marine Operators to Meet Coming Emission Restrictions

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Nov. 29, 2017 – At the 2017 International WorkBoat Show, Volvo Penta is previewing its new engine and aftertreatment concept to comply with the forthcoming IMO Tier III standards.

Volvo Penta’s IMO Tier III solution, based on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by more than 75 percent, exceeding the minimum specified in the IMO Tier III specification. It also reduces noise levels by up to 35 dBA.

The new IMO Tier III solution is based on Volvo Group’s history with SCR technology, which has been optimized for heavy-duty marine applications. The system uses urea diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is mixed with exhaust gases in the SCR unit to remove NOx.

“We are able to draw on the extensive experience of the Volvo Group in emission reduction technology for trucks, buses and construction equipment. Our SCR technology is mature and thoroughly proven over many years. We see SCR as the ideal solution for marine customers because it keeps the engine working efficiently with optimized fuel consumption, without sacrificing power,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas.

The Volvo Penta IMO Tier III solution will have undergone 20,000 hours of field testing under tough marine conditions when it is formally launched in 2018. It will initially be offered on Volvo Penta’s 13-liter models, which are used for a wide range of marine applications. It will be available for inboards and IPS, as well as auxiliary engines and gensets. The new SCR version will have the same footprint as current models, and the exhaust aftertreatment system works with Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) and Marine Commercial Control (MCC) systems.

The IMO Tier III standard will come into force on engines below 600Kw when the NOx Emission Control Area (NECA) for the Baltic and North Sea is implemented in 2021. Other regions of the world will follow.

Torqeedo Powers Fleet of Electric Passenger Vessels for San Antonio’s River Walk

Crystal Lake, Ill. – Nov. 29, 2017 – The new fleet of 43 custom passenger boats, which were deployed in October 2017 on the iconic River Walk in San Antonio, Texas, are powered by electric propulsion systems from Torqeedo.

Built by Lake Assault Boats, each of the new environmentally friendly 27-ft. vessels is driven by a complete Torqeedo electric propulsion system, including a Cruise 10.0 electric outboard engine and 16 Power 26-104 lithium batteries. The system is designed for automatic recharging with a built-in shorepower connection onboard. The Torqeedo propulsion systems are designed to be virtually maintenance free with minimal downtime.

“Sustainability and care for the environment were a top priority for the new fleet,” said John Jacks, City of San Antonio Center City Development and Operations Director. “These new boats give passengers a unique experience, cruising smoothly and quietly through the San Antonio River, consuming no fuel and keeping our air clean.”

The powerful, lightweight Torqeedo Cruise 10.0 outboard engine provides 12 kW peak output and 10 kW continuous output, equivalent to a 20 hp combustion engine. The propulsion system includes remote throttle and steering connections and an integrated onboard computer with GPS-based range calculation.

The new barges typically cruise at four knots and can normally operate up to 12 hours without recharging, according to the barges’ operators.

The barges seat 40 passengers and have five distinct barge rail patterns and can be configured to support multiple roles for tours, dining, water taxis, entertaining and special events, such as the annual Ford Holiday River Parade.

The San Antonio River Walk is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined by restaurants, shops, bars, theatres, museums, parks and the city’s major tourist attractions. It is an important part of the city’s identity and urban fabric, and has inspired similar projects in other cities across the United States and Latin America.

Volvo Penta Stakes Leadership Position in Wind Farm Support Vessels

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Nov. 28, 2017 – Volvo Penta has emerged as a leading supplier of propulsion systems for support boats in the booming offshore wind farm industry in Europe, and is poised to capture a significant position as new wind farms come into service in North America.

“Wind farm support vessels operate under some of the world’s most difficult conditions,” said Jens Bering, vice president of marine sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “They must be able to work 24/7 in high winds and heavy seas delivering crew and materials quickly and safely to the offshore towers without wasting time and fuel. On station, it’s a big challenge for the operator to nose up to the turbine towers and hold position in turbulent waters when transferring technicians and supplies.”

Volvo Penta’s IPS is the ideal solution for these vessels, according to Bering. “When compared to standard shaft drives, IPS consistently produces 30-40 percent longer cruising range, 15-20 percent higher top speed, 20-35 percent reduction in fuel consumption, 20-35 percent less CO2 emissions and 50 percent lower perceived noise levels. In addition, IPS provides safe and predictable boat handling, especially with its standard joystick controls. IPS is also easier to install, taking about 50 percent less time than inboard shafts, and is easier to service. The pods also provide higher torque and faster acceleration, as well as higher bollard pull of approximately four tons per pod unit, so it will not lose grip in high seas.”

Bering cited a study conducted by BMT Nigel Gee in June 2015, comparing propulsion options for a 26m vessel. IPS scored higher than fixed pitch, controllable pitch, waterjet and linear jet systems, in terms of bollard pull, efficiency, maneuverability and redundancy. The slightly higher initial cost of IPS is more than offset by the dramatic improvement in life-cycle costs.

Njord Offshore is a good example. The U.K.-based company operates a fleet of 15 crew transfer vessels (CTVs) of 21m and 26m. Six of its 26m CTVs are powered by a Volvo Penta IPS900 Quad installation.

Tom Mehew, director at Njord Offshore, said in 2016, “We’ve been using Volvo Penta’s IPS900 Quad system in our 26m CTVs for over a year now and all expectations have been fulfilled. We, and our customers, require speed, maneuverability and efficiency combined with high static bollard push. In addition, we also look for reliability and redundancy to maximize the uptime for our clients. The advantages of the IPS have been fully proven. The joystick controls are intuitive, the control response times are fast and accurate, which ultimately makes docking on a boat landing in rough weather easier and safer – we also have a dynamic fender system to reduce the load on the boat landings during these conditions.”

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) predicts rapid growth of offshore wind energy developments in U.S. coastal waters. The first American wind farm at Block Island is now operational, and DOE reports that there are 28 U.S. wind farm projects with a total capacity of over 23,000 megawatts now in the works. Many of them will be further offshore – 30 miles or more.

These projects will require a fleet of specialized support vessels, and Volvo Penta plans to be ready to answer the call, according to Bering. “We have a strong market share in the European wind farm support vessel segment. We have a great deal of real-world experience in this sector and excellent relationships with the naval architects, shipyards and operators, and we are well positioned to meet the demand for these highly specialized vessels as the North American market opens over the next few years.”

Torqeedo Powers Solar Boat’s Great Loop Trek

Crystal Lake, Ill. – Nov. 28, 2017 – Capt. Jim Greer and his solar boat RA returned to their home port in New Port Richey, Florida, Nov. 8, after completing a 7,200-mile voyage running totally on solar panels, batteries and an all-electric propulsion system provided by Torqeedo.

The Great Loop voyage took RA from Florida up the East Coast, through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi and across the Gulf of Mexico, completing the trip at Sand Bar Island, Florida. It was completed in two segments with a break in Waterford, New York. Greer said this was the first time a solar-powered all-electric boat has completed the Great Loop.

“With solar panels, batteries and Torqeedo electric motors we were able to complete our travel days without any use of fossil fuels or plugging into marina electric hook-ups when docked,” said Greer. “We don’t have a backup generator or power cords in case of emergency, as that’s the adventure in it.”

The custom vessel, designed and built by Greer, is a 48-ft. trimaran named for the sun god of ancient Egypt. It is propelled by a Torqeedo Cruise 10.0 kW motor and a pair of smaller Cruise 4.0 kW outboards. The electric motors draw power from two banks of batteries – one with four 12V AGM batteries in a 48V configuration, and the other with eight of the same batteries also in a 48V configuration. The batteries are recharged from the array of 20 245-W solar panels on the roof of the cabin.

Greer estimates that the cost of fuel for a similar size boat would have been at least $10,000 for the Great Loop. “Not only did we save money on fuel, we achieved zero emissions, demonstrating that boating doesn’t have to pollute the air or water with emissions from a combustion engine.”

“The Torqeedo motors are real workhorses,” said Greer. “They are amazingly efficient. We recorded a top speed of 10.7 mph at 7,300 W, but we normally ran at five mph to optimize battery capacity, typically putting in a 30-mile run per day.”

The overall integrated solar-battery-motor system worked very well, according to Greer. “We could easily run all day on solar power when the weather was good. We could also run on the batteries for extended periods of time without sunlight. Our longest single run was 142 miles in 42 hours non-stop day and night crossing the Gulf of Mexico.”

VDC XXT Flywheel System Offers 50 Percent More Power Capacity in Same Footprint, Available for Immediate Shipment

CERRITOS, Calif. – Nov. 8, 2017 – Calnetix Technologies’ VYCON® energy storage products division has expanded its highly successful family of flywheel kinetic energy storage systems with the introduction of the new higher-capacity VDC XXT.

The VDC XXT delivers over 450 kW and 6,300 kW-seconds of energy storage to provide reliable always-on power protection for large, critical processes, such as data centers, healthcare imaging systems and other power-intensive applications.

“In working closely with our UPS partners and end customers in the cloud and hyperscale data center markets, we found there was a need for greater power storage capacity and higher power density solutions for larger mission-critical applications,” said VYCON President Frank DeLattre. “To meet that requirement, we designed the VDC XXT model to boost power rating by 50 percent within the same footprint as our other models for an impressive power density of 72kW per square ft.”

The VYCON flywheel-based kinetic energy storage system interfaces with the DC bus of the UPS, receiving charging current from the UPS and providing DC current to the UPS inverter during discharge. Upon loss of utility power, continuous and regulated DC power is instantly delivered to the UPS with ample time to transfer to an onsite generator upon a prolonged power outage.

With a 20-year operational life, the VDC XXT offers a highly reliable, environmentally friendly, cost-effective and compact alternative to battery-based power backup systems.

“Valve-regulated lead-acid battery systems are often troubled by unpredictable reliability, high maintenance costs, hazmat issues and frequent replacement, causing uncertainty and potential downtime during electrical disruptions,” said Kamal Diwan, VYCON Vice President of Sales. “Industry studies have revealed that non-detectable and detectable battery failures account for more than 80 percent of all double-conversion UPS failures. Replacing batteries with kinetic energy storage can greatly enhance the critical power chain’s overall reliability and mitigate risk of downtime.”

“In addition, the elimination of hazardous materials, such as lead acid, allows organizations to achieve LEED points toward green-building standards by converting to the VYCON flywheel solution,” Diwan added.

Diwan noted that the VDC XXT can be used in a stand-alone solution or to augment a battery-based UPS. Since 98 percent of utility outages are 10 seconds or less, the flywheel can deliver the needed DC energy to the UPS first during these events, saving the batteries for longer-term outages and thus prolonging battery life.

VYCON’s unique patented technology uses full five-axis active magnetic bearings. The frictionless maintenance-free flywheel levitation solution provides up to 99.6 percent energy efficiency and eliminates the need for lubrication or periodic replacement of mechanical bearings.

The VDC XXT systems are UL and CE approved and are certified and integrated by major manufacturers of three-phase UPS systems, including Eaton, General Electric, Mitsubishi, Riello, Schneider Electric, Socomec and Vertiv. Over 1,300 VYCON systems have been deployed worldwide. They are supported by a network of more than 200 trained technicians with 24/7 availability.
