(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – July 17, 2018 – Volvo Penta of the Americas is now supplying twin inboard 1,000 hp D13 diesels for the new 44 Convertible from Viking Yachts.
Johnson & Towers, Volvo Penta’s marine power center in the mid-Atlantic, provided technical support for specifying, installing and testing the D13-1000s in the first 44 C model earlier this year.
“The D13-1000 has an excellent power-to-weight ratio,” said Bob Shomo, Jr., vice president of Johnson & Towers. “Another key factor in the decision was Volvo Penta’s expanded power center network and service dealers across Viking’s core market areas. Many of these power centers also handle the other engine brand used by Viking, providing a one-stop service experience.”
“The first installation on the Viking production line went very smoothly, thanks to Viking’s superb engineering team, applications support from Volvo Penta and especially the extraordinary efforts of Johnson & Towers’ sales engineer Ken Houle,” said Shomo.
In sea trials, the twin Volvo Penta D13-1000 diesels met or exceeded all expectations, according to Chris Landry, director of communications at Viking Yachts. “The boat achieved top speeds of over 38 knots, with a cruising speed of 32-34 knots. The engines provided outstanding acceleration and low-RPM torque, and a smooth, quiet ride. The 44 Convertible is a comfortable tournament contender, equally capable of galloping hard to the canyons on gnarly weather days or blasting over to the Bahamas.”
“Viking’s new 44 C is a remarkable achievement – a rare combination of innovative interior design and seakeeping performance. Their selection of Volvo Penta is an important validation of the superior engineering that went into our new D13-1000 as well as our outstanding power center team at Johnson & Towers,” said Jens Bering, vice president of marine sales at Volvo Penta of the Americas. “It’s a great honor to be a supplier to Viking Yachts, and we look forward to building on this newly established relationship with one of the great iconic brand names in the boating industry.”

MIAMI – July 5, 2018 – AST&Science today announced it has received a significant equity investment from Cisneros.
According to AST&Science CEO and Chairman Abel Avellan, the Cisneros investment will accelerate development and deployment of the company’s innovative patented low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite technology.
AST&Science is a technology company founded by well-known space industry entrepreneur Abel Avellan, who started EMC and turned it into the world’s fastest-growing satellite service provider, then sold it for $550 million in 2016. Avellan’s latest venture will use AST&Science’s patented technology to transform the way LEO satellites are designed, manufactured, launched and used in space to enable a broad range of commercial and defense applications.
Founded in 1929, Cisneros is a global enterprise with four primary areas of focus: media and entertainment, digital advertising solutions, real estate and social leadership. Cisneros Media produces content in 12 languages that is distributed in over 100 countries, reaching over half a billion people globally. Cisneros also operates the leading digital mobile, online and audio ad network serving the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets.
“Cisneros’ deep and broad experience in media and telecoms, which includes the launching of DirectTV in Latin America, will provide a very valuable perspective as we prepare to launch our space technologies to market,” said Avellan.
“Creating new transformative ideas and building a better world is our passion at Cisneros. Expanding frontiers and transforming our present into a bright future through social leadership is our vision,” said Adriana Cisneros, CEO of Cisneros. “Investing in AST&Science fits perfectly within our focus as a company. At Cisneros we thrive at building global businesses. Through AST&Science we will help to create market disruption through the use of satellites once again.”
Earlier this year, AST&Science acquired a controlling interest in the European satellite company NanoAvionics. The company is also investing $25 million to build an additional manufacturing facility in the United States for high-volume production of its ultra-small satellites, called Microns.
LionTree Advisors acted as exclusive financial advisor to AST&Science in the transaction.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – July 2, 2018 – Elcome has completed a major investment in modernizing its paper nautical chart distribution processes to meet emerging market conditions while improving quality and customer service.
Based in Dubai, Elcome has been a United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) ADMIRALTY agent since 1980 and is South East Asia’s largest supplier of nautical charts and publications. The company has upgraded its chart supply business to a print-on-demand model that provides faster response times for customer requests and eliminates the need for manual corrections.
Konstiantyn Matvieiev, senior manager of charts and publications for Elcome, explained: “Traditionally, chart agents would maintain an inventory of thousands of nautical charts, which would have to be corrected manually with pen-and-ink updates. This is inefficient, wasteful and time consuming, resulting in high overhead costs to the supplier and potential delays to a purchaser needing an out-of-stock chart. As new editions are published, the old charts in inventory must be tossed out and replaced with the new ones. Some paper charts may remain on the shelves for long periods of time, resulting in a large number of corrections to be made before delivery to the customer.”
Elcome’s digital printers produce charts directly from the UKHO ADMIRALTY cartographic database, providing immediate access to the full worldwide portfolio of charts on request. The full-scale printed charts meet the highest cartographic quality standards and are fully up-to-date when printed.
“Our facility in Dubai was one of the first sites when UKHO rolled out its print-on-demand program in 2013,” Matvieiev said. “We initially started with one chart printer, and we have since added a second one in Dubai and one in our Sri Lanka office. Now, 95 percent of all charts we sell are printed in-house.This has allowed us to reduce the number of paper charts in stock from 6,000 to about 300 fast-moving local charts. We have also reduced the number of manual chart corrections per week from 600 to less than 50, enabling us to reassign two of the three chart correctors to different roles within the company.”
Elcome is also gearing up to convert existing and new customers to digital publications instead of printed ones, allowing a further reduction in inventory of paper stocks, Matvieiev added.
