HUMPHREE PROVIDES STABILIZATION SYSTEM FOR NEW BAR HARBOR WHALE WATCH VESSEL

August 27, 2018

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Aug. 27, 2018 – Passengers and crew on Acadia Explorer, the new passenger boat just commissioned by Bar Harbor Whale Watching Co. in Maine, will experience a smooth and stable ride, thanks to interceptors and Active Ride Control supplied by Humphree USA.

Acadia Explorer is a 98-ft. catamaran that carries up to 149 passengers. The boat was designed by Incat Crowther and built by Gulf Craft in Franklin, Louisiana. It will be used as a passenger tender for visiting cruise ships and also for lighthouse and nature tours.

The new catamaran is equipped with two Humphree H800 and two Humphree H1250 electric-powered interceptors. The interceptor blades adjust automatically to create lift that counteracts roll and pitch motions. The Humphree Active Ride Control is a highly sophisticated digital system that uses inputs from GPS, gyro and accelerometers to measure 3D rates of turn and acceleration. In addition to stabilizing for roll and pitch, Active Ride Control automatically optimizes the boat’s trim and list angles and adjusts the heeling angle during turns for better maneuverability and passenger comfort.

“Passenger comfort is a number one priority for our new tour boat operating on the Maine coast, where strong winds and currents are often encountered,” said Matt Ketchen, vessel operations manager, port manager/port engineering, Bar Harbor Whale Watching Co. “The Humphree interceptor system eliminates seasickness and discomfort, regardless of sea and wind conditions. The automatic tilt, list and turn control functions also improve performance and reduce fuel consumption.”

Passenger ferries and excursion boats are a growing market for Humphree’s stabilization products, according to Sean Berrie, CEO of Humphree USA. “We provide a field-proven, fully automatic solution to ensure passenger comfort and safety and also to optimize performance and achieve significant gains in fuel efficiency. Gulf Craft has specified our interceptors and Active Ride Control on many of its catamaran and monohull newbuilds, including the recently delivered catamaran ferry for Sea Streak, running between New Jersey and New York City.”

Volvo Penta Conducts Industrial Engine Training in Alaska

August 22, 2018

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Aug. 22, 2018 – Volvo Penta of the Americas recently conducted two customized training courses for its industrial business dealers and customers in Alaska. The sessions were held in Anchorage and at the Pogo Mine near Delta Junction.

Twelve technicians, representing Delta Industrial Services, Inc., Matson-Dutch Harbor, Tyler Rental Inc., and Sandvik, attended the first course, held June 25-27 in Anchorage. Over the three days, they received full comprehensive training on Volvo Penta’s industrial heavy-duty diesels, including product knowledge, troubleshooting, diagnostics and servicing the equipment. An assessment test was given to the technicians at the end of the course, with all receiving their certifications.

The second training session was held on June 29 at the Pogo Mine, about 350 miles northeast of Anchorage. One of the state’s top gold and ore processing mines, Pogo has more than 90 miles of underground roads winding to depths of more than 1,000 feet below the Earth’s surface. In an onsite conference area, Delta Industrial and Pogo technicians trained on diagnostic tools for the engines and after-treatment systems that keep the high-capacity loaders working day and night in the mine.

“This was the first time we have conducted training courses in Alaska, which is a rapidly growing market for our industrial engines,” said Magnus Gedda, manager of product training for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “The primary purpose of the training is to support our dealers in Alaska by making sure our partner technicians are up to speed with the latest Volvo Penta technologies.”

“The Pogo Mine is one of the harshest environments in the world, located in an extremely remote site,” said Gedda. “If one machine goes down, it’s an urgent repair because it impacts other machines that are part of the mining process. The training is aimed to make sure technicians know how to diagnose the situation quickly and respond immediately.”

Volvo Penta of the Americas offers a wide selection of training courses for service technicians, which are held at the company’s training center in Chesapeake, Virginia, and at remote locations in strategic areas to provide more choices for dealers and customers to attend. In 2017, Volvo Penta trained a total of over 1,200 technicians across all business segments.

Access Energy to Showcase Active Magnetic Bearing Supported Integrated Power Module

CERRITOS, Calif. – Aug. 7, 2018 – Calnetix Technologies will present a paper on active magnetic bearing technology and subsidiary Access Energy will showcase an active magnetic bearing supported Integrated Power Module at the 16th International Symposium on Magnetic Bearings (ISMB16) in Beijing, China.

Rasish Khatri, Lead Engineer and Larry Hawkins, Director of Technology, Magnetic Bearings, will deliver a paper on August 16 entitled, “Applicability of API 617 8th Edition and ISO 14839-3 in Evaluating the Dynamic Stability of AMB-Supported Compressors.”

The Calnetix paper reviews and compares the dynamics requirements included in API 617 8th Edition Annex E with those of ISO 14839-3. The authors analyze the stability criteria of both standards by simulating the synchronous response, sensitivity transfer function and closed-loop transfer function of simple 1-D dynamic systems.

“There is a growing demand for oil free systems in multiple industries – compressors, blowers, chillers and other turbomachinery,” said Vatche Artinian, CEO of Calnetix. “The bearings form the backbone of high-speed turbomachinery, and Calnetix is uniquely positioned to provide cost-effective integral drive solutions for turbomachinery on our Powerflux™ magnetic bearings.”

“We are utilizing Calnetix’s magnetic bearings in our Carefree™ Integrated Power Module (IPM), which is the heart of our Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems that are designed to tap into the extra low temperature heat sources available for power production,” said Venky Krishnan, Vice President of Access Energy. “With one moving part, and no physical bearing contact, the IPM provides exceptional reliability in a very small footprint.”

Access Energy will showcase its Carefree™ IPM and ORC systems at Booth # 530. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the display to learn more about these technologies and solutions.

“Where’s the Wheel?” Schaefer Yachts Shows New Pleasure Yacht with Volvo Penta Joystick-Only Steering

August 6, 2018

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Aug. 6, 2018 – The new Schaefer 580 motoryacht has no steering wheel at the helm station – only a Volvo Penta joystick.

The new joystick-controlled motoryacht, powered by twin Volvo Penta 670 hp IPS800s, made its debut at the recent 2018 Rio Boat Show.

Márcio Schaefer, CEO of Brazil’s largest yachtbuilder, said: “At Schaefer Yachts, we have had a long-standing relationship with Volvo Penta for over a decade. When we designed the Schaefer 580 with Volvo Penta IPS we decided to go with a joystick-only steering control system. Our team worked very closely with the Volvo Penta engineers, and in roughly two months we developed this joystick-only steering system, eliminating the wheel altogether. In our opinion, this innovation will improve maneuverability and bring a new level of ergonomics to the helm station.”

“We pride ourselves on being innovators at Volvo Penta,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “We were the first to introduce IPS and the first to offer joystick for docking and driving. Wheel-free joystick-only steering with IPS is the next logical step in our Easy Boating strategy to harness new technical solutions to make it easier for owners to operate their boats and enjoy the experience of being on the water.”

“We’re especially proud to partner with our long-time customer Schaefer Yachts to introduce this innovation into the Brazil marketplace,” he added.

Schaefer said that the launch of the 580 with joystick steering at the biggest nautical event in South America stirred significant interest in the marketplace, and the yachtbuilder plans to continue incorporating joystick-only steering in other new motoryacht models moving forward.
