“Case history on capturing photography and video on the bridge of a ship at sea.”
Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit is a world leader in ship navigation technology, supplying state-of-the-art integrated bridge systems (IBS) for commercial and naval ships worldwide. The company had recently introduced its new-generation IBS technology, but there was a pressing need for high-quality at-sea shipboard photography and video of the products in use.
Rhodes Communications arranged for a shipboard photo/video shoot aboard M/V Stena Hollandica, brand-new passenger-vehicle ferry, which had been equipped with the latest Sperry Marine IBS. The ship sails on overnight routes between Harwich on the East Coast of England and Hoek van Holland, near Rotterdam. Rhodes Communications carried out the project on a turnkey basis. The scope of work included making all the arrangements with the shipping company, selecting and pre-briefing the photographer and videographer, compiling shot lists and directing the photo and video shoot on board the ship. The team assembled by Rhodes Communications boarded the ship late in the evening, captured night-time shots on the passage to the Netherlands, then rode the ship back to Harwich the following morning, shooting in the daylight.
Sperry Marine used the still photos for a wide range of purposes, including PR, brochures, signs, presentation slides and posters. The video was edited into a continuous stream for trade shows, as well as shorter clips for presentations and other applications.
